University of Iowa Health care is continuing their groundbreaking research on the effectiveness of COVID vaccines.

The Daily Iowan reports that UIHC co-led a study two years ago researching the benefits of new COVID-19 vaccines — finding them 89 percent to 96 percent effective among those who took two doses.

They recently announced that they’re working with UCLA again on a second version of the “Preventing Emerging Infections through Vaccine Effectiveness Testing” study, called “PREVENT.”

The PREVENT II research will evaluate the ongoing effectiveness of the vaccines and boosters on the ever-changing strains of COVID-19. The study’s goals include identifying differences in vaccine effectiveness by age and health factors, with health care job categories, comparing the different vaccines being used, and the effectiveness of boosters.

Because health care workers were the first to be vaccinated, the study will employ personnel from 20 academic medical centers across the country, including Iowa City, Kansas City and Chicago in the Midwest.

Participants will be recruited over a nine-month period with incentives of up to $100 for those who sign up for the study.
