A deferred judgment has been given to an Iowa City man accused of attempting to entice a minor for sex acts.
Iowa City Police say in September of 2023, 34-year-old Michael Wheeler of Elmridge Avenue began to communicate with a person he believed to be under the age of 16. During the conversation, he asked the person to meet him for sex acts.
Wheeler allegedly sent the other party a picture of his erect penis and described what he would do to the minor.
Wheeler arrived at the pre-arranged meeting place while continuing to communicate with the person. He was then located and detained.
When interviewed, Wheeler alleged that he was going to meet with the other person to warn them about the dangers of the internet. He did reportedly admit to communicating with the other person about sex acts.
Wheeler was charged with enticing a minor under 16 for sexual purposes, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years, if convicted. Online records show Wheeler was given a deferred judgment by Judge Brandon Schrock on February 28th. Wheeler must also spend three years on probation and appear on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry for the next decade.
