An Iowa City man faces a number of charges after allegedly violating a no-contact order.

The incident occurred late Sunday night.  Officers responded to the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street on reports of a woman screaming for help and telling a man to get away from her. Blood was allegedly observed splattered on the floor through a kitchen window.

Police made their way inside the residence and discovered the victim bleeding from her foot.  They also reportedly found 50-year-old Jeremiah Johnson of 501 Southgate hiding behind a bed frame in the woman’s bedroom.

Officers then interviewed the victim, who stated that Johnson punched and strangled her several times during an alleged assault.  He also reportedly prevented her from answering the door when police arrived on scene.

The woman allegedly had obvious signs of injury all over her body.  While investigating the incident, police learned that Johnson and the woman were the subject of an active no-contact order issued December 20th last year. A search incident to arrest allegedly found a one-hitter with a strong smell of burnt marijuana on Johnson’s person.

Johnson was taken into custody. He’s been charged with violation of the no contact order, False Imprisonment, Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow, Assault Committed on a person protected by a No Contact Order, Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or Subsequent offense, and possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over sixteen years in prison.
