Longtime West High boys basketball coach Steve Bergman has resigned.
Bergman wrote in a news release, “After 35 years I have made the difficult decision to step down from my position as the head basketball coach at Iowa City West. This decision comes after much reflection. While I appreciate being given the option to continue as coach, I believe now is the right time to move on.”
Bergman has 666 career wins over 39 seasons as a head coach, with the last 35 seasons and 623 wins coming at West High.
Under Bergman, the Trojans won Class 4A state titles in 1998, 2000, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2017.
