A Solon woman is accused of defrauding an Iowa City car rental agency out of over $180,000.
51-year-old Barbara Ray of Quincy Road was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 2:00 Monday afternoon. Iowa City Police say Ray was the manager at Budget Car Rental on Stevens Drive between January 1st of 2021 and June 30th of 2024 when she altered rental agreements to hide personal rentals to individuals. Ray allegedly voided 466 different transactions and sent the money into her personal accounts via Cash App and Chime Financial. The total loss to Budget is estimated at $187,184.16.
Ray is charged with 1st Degree Theft, Money Laundering, 1st Degree Fraudulent Practices and Providing False Information Regarding a Financial Transaction. If convicted on all counts, she faces a maximum of 40 years in prison.
