An Iowa City man faces prison time after allegedly violating a no-contact order and possessing a firearm.

A no-contact order was issued January 22nd against 45-year-old Derek Ash of Dunley Court after being charged with Domestic Assault impeding airflow, 2nd offense Domestic Assault and two counts of Child Endangerment.  The protected party reported that Ash arrived at their place of residence on April 26th and had been staying with them since.

On Tuesday, Ash was asked to leave the premises due to the protected parties’ concern about his alcohol consumption and issues that develop because of it.  Ash reportedly refused to leave, prompting a call to police.

The protected party advised that Ash had two firearms on the premises, and attempted to collect them in order to get them out of the house. She discovered one of the firearms was missing from its locked gun case. When confronted, Ash allegedly told her that he would return the firearm if she returned money he alleged she took from him.

Ash then reportedly made suicidal statements before locking himself in a bathroom.

A warrant was issued, and Ash was taken into custody Wednesday. He faces a contempt charge on the no-contact order, as well as Dominion or Control of a Weapon as a Domestic Abuser and Person Ineligible to carry Weapons. If convicted on all charges, Ash faces a prison term of up to six years.
