A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for an Iowa City memorial service to honor former West High football player Charles Rogers.

Rogers, who lived in New York, was competing in the Brooklyn Half-Marathon May 17th when he had a cardiac arrest and passed away. He graduated from West in 2012 after throwing for 2000 yards and rushing for over 1000 yards his senior year, leading the Trojans to the Class 4A state quarterfinals.

Rogers played 2 years at Iowa State before transferring to the University of Minnesota. He was 31 years old at the time of his death.

The GoFundMe page, organized by Rogers’ sister Tiffany Bass, says the memorial service will take place this Saturday in Iowa City. A $7000 goal was set to hold the service, and help with travel expenses for his family from Georgia, Arkansas, Colorado, and across Iowa.

As of Monday over $5600 had been raised.
