An Iowa City man who attempted to elude a sheriff’s deputy after an attempted traffic stop for speeding has been arrested and charged with OWI.

The deputy reports he was running stationary radar near Taft Avenue and Highway 6 Sunday afternoon when he noticed a black 2017 Tesla driving on the shoulder at a high rate of speed.  When the deputy pulled out behind the Tesla, the driver, later identified as 19-year-old Carsen Newton of American Legion Road, took off in an reported attempt to elude law enforcement.

Pursuit speeds allegedly reached 120-130 miles per hour, with the deputy unsuccessfully catching up with Newton until he stopped at his residence and exited the vehicle.

He reportedly had the odor of ingested alcohol, and an open can of beer was found in the vehicle’s cup holder. Newton allegedly admitted to drinking recently at a golf course.  Both PBT and Datamaster tests reportedly showed him to be slightly over the legal limit to drive.

Newton was charged with felony Eluding and first offense OWI. He could be sentenced to up to six years in prison if convicted on both counts.
