Access to properties adjacent to 5th Street to be affected starting Monday

5th Street Improvements – Access Changes

Beginning Monday morning, June 2, access to certain properties adjacent to the 5th Street construction will change to allow for continued progress on new driveways and sidewalks in the work zone identified in the map below. Here is a summary of property access changes:

  • 1616 5th Street will use the existing driveway east of the work zone.
  • 1632 and 1648 5th Street will not have vehicular access and will need to park vehicles on 7th Street or in the S.T. Morrison Park parking lot. These properties should have full driveway access by June 16.
  • 1670 through 1708 5th Street will use the new driveway at 1708 5th Street for access west of the work zone, with full driveway access expected by June 16.
  • 1710, 1712, 1745, and 1755 5th Street will begin using their new driveways.

About Construction
The Phase 3 of the 5th Street Improvements project began in mid-March. Phase 3 closes 5th Street to through traffic from just west of the 5th Street & 7th Street intersection to just west of the driveway of 1745 & 1755 5th Street.

Transit Information
Coralville Transit Route 21 (5th Street), Route 24 (Night), and Route 25 (Saturday) detour around the work zone, and bus stops near the project area are temporarily relocated. Coralville Transit

Completion Date
Phase 3 has a required completion date of June 27, 2025, with 5th Street re-opening to traffic ahead of the July 4th holiday.

About the Project
5th Street is being reconstructed from 12th Avenue to 20th Avenue in multiple phases to manage access to adjacent properties. Construction began in 2024 and the project will be substantially complete in 2026. In 2024, 5th Street improvements were substantially completed from 20th Avenue to just west of S.T. Morrison Park. The project includes concrete street pavement, wider sidewalks, water main, storm sewer, and streetscape enhancements including decorative lighting, street trees, and landscaping.
