The Iowa Firefighters Memorial in Coralville has begun fundraising for an expansion.
The expansion is necessary due to the anticipated additional firefighter names on its walls. Nearly 3800 names have been added to the walls, and space is running out.
Mike Reuman, a member of the Iowa Firefighters Memorial committee, said when the idea of the Memorial came up in 1989, they envisioned the walls would last 100 years. It started with a few hundred names , but an expansion was completed in 2005 and again in 2010.
Projected cost of the third expansion is $300,000, of which $125.000 has already been raised. The expansion will add 12 new granite slab panels, sidewalk work, drainage and lights for the walls.
The committee hopes to begin construction either this fall or after the 2026 Memorial Service.
