An altercation at a downtown Iowa City bar led to the arrest of a Burlington man over the weekend.

Officers were called to El-Ray’s Live and Dive just before Midnight Saturday on reports of an assault on a member of the staff. Upon arrival, they made contact with the victim. The suspect, 21-year-old Trent Burnett, almost fell inside the bar, and the victim attempted to catch him.

Burnett then allegedly stood up and started punching the victim, who suffered a bloody lip and a laceration to the left eye.

Burnett later returned to the bar and was positively identified by the victim as the one who committed the assault.

A search incident to arrest reportedly turned up a small bag of marijuana in Burnett’s back pocket.

He was charged with assault causing bodily injury and marijuana possession and could face up to two years in prison if convicted.
