An Iowa City firefighter was injured while battling Thursday night’s fire at the Centennial Building.
As KCJJ first reported Friday morning, firefighters were called to the Iowa Avenue facility…which currently houses the State Historical Society of Iowa…just before midnight Thursday night for smoke on the roof. Crews arrived within three minutes of being dispatched. After accessing the roof, firefighters found roofing material burning. The fire was brought under control by 12:15 a.m.
Firefighters remained on the scene for overhaul and cleanup until 1:55 a.m. The inside of the building did not sustain any damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal’s Office, although fireworks have not been ruled out.
A Friday update from the ICFD indicates a firefighter suffered an injury while responding to the incident.
Just last month, the State Historical Society of Iowa announced it would be moving all of its property inside the Centennial Building to its newly revamped facility in Des Moines.
