A former Iowa City man who once tried to eat marijuana during a traffic stop has died while in custody for weapons convictions out of Cedar Rapids.

The Iowa Department of Corrections says 46-year-old Steven Lard died at 1:47 Monday morning at University of Iowa Health Care on Hawkins Drive. He’d been serving a multi-year sentence for weapons charges out of Linn County that started on October 4th of last year.

Lard was convicted on drunk driving and drug charges after a 2013 traffic stop in Iowa City during which he tried to eat marijuana that was in his possession to avoid it from being found by authorities.
