A Tama man was charged with OWI after multiple calls identified a man driving the wrong way on I380 early Sunday morning.

According to the arrest report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office,  dispatch received multiple calls about a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.  A deputy located 39-year-old Joseph Hanus of Overlook Drive in Tama still heading the wrong way at around the 7 mile marker. He passed several vehicles before stopping for the deputy.

Upon contact, Hanus reportedly had the odor of ingested alcohol, bloodshot watery eyes and unsteady balance. He allegedly admitted to drinking and being intoxicated.  After being unable to fully complete field sobriety tests, Hanus provided a PBT showing his breath-alcohol level at .227 percent; a subsequent Datamaster reading came up .2 percent.

Hanus was charged with first offense OWI, a serious misdemeanor.
