An area transient accused of opening a bottle of whiskey at a Coralville convenience store and not paying for it was charged with 3rd degree Theft.

The incident occurred Friday night at the Kum & Go on the Coralville Strip just after 9pm.  According to the clerk, 37-year-old Todd Brodie entered the store and selected a bottle of Johnnie Walker whiskey valued at around $25.. He then reportedly opened the bottle in front of the employee and took a swig.  He then allegedly put the bottle down and attempted to exit the store.  The clerk gave Brodie an opportunity to pay for the whiskey, but he reportedly declined.

A check of Brodie’s criminal history showed two previous theft convictions in Johnson County from 2023.

He was charged with 3rd degree Theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to two years if convicted.
