A Louisiana man stopped for speeding on Interstate 80 Saturday evening was taken into custody on a weapon charge.

A state trooper reportedly clocked 34-year-old Javarcus Gillespie of Baton Rouge at 83 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone near the 1st Avenue exit in Coralville. After being taken to the squad car for processing, Gillespie notified the trooper that there was a firearm under his front seat.

Gillespie stated the weapon was not stolen and a check of the database confirmed his statement.  However, a criminal records check found a felony drug possession conviction in South Dakota, making him ineligible to possess a firearm.

Gillespie was charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted.
