A man wanted since 2002 for alleged forgeries and thefts was taken into custody early Tuesday morning.
Police say now-44-year-old James Coleman took a counterfeit check for $1368.94 and cashed it at Fast Cash on South First Avenue the 26th of October 2001. When the business presented it to the bank, it came back as a forgery. Coleman reportedly presented an Illinois ID card when he cashed the check, and the employee that accepted the check identified Coleman as the person who cashed the check.
Then on November 19th the same year, Coleman allegedly cashed a $2500 counterfeit check at Hawkeye State Bank written on the account of a person who doesn’t know Coleman or wrote the check.
A warrant was issued in June 2002; Coleman remained at large until early Tuesday morning when he was taken to the Johnson County Jail. He faces two counts each of Forgery and 2nd degree theft; Coleman could spend twenty years behind bars if convicted on all charges.
