An Iowa City man has been given a four-day jail sentence after leading authorities on a high-speed chase last year.
22-year-old Alexander White of Wylde Green Road was headed northbound on Highway 218 just before 3am on May 5th, 2024 when he was pulled over near the Melrose Avenue exit. Another vehicle that was not involved in the incident also pulled over, and the trooper advised White to wait while he sent the other vehicle on its way.
While speaking with the driver of the other vehicle, White allegedly fled from the traffic stop, and a pursuit ensued. Lights and siren were deployed, and White reportedly shut off all the lights on his vehicle shortly afterward. He continued northbound and took the eastbound Interstate 80 exit while reaching speeds of over 120 miles per hour.
White then took the Coral Ridge exit and spun out, coming to a stop at the bottom of the ramp. He was called out of the vehicle and was placed under arrest.
White allegedly had the odor of ingested alcohol and bloodshot watery eyes. Two baggies of marijuana were reportedly found in his vehicle. White’s breath alcohol level was measured at .164%
White was charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Eluding, and Possession of Marijuana. If convicted on all counts, he could have been sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
Court records show last week Judge Jason Burns sentenced White to four days in jail on the OWI charge and gave him a deferred judgment and probation on the eluding charge. The drug charge was dismissed.
