An Iowa City man was charged with his first OWI after allegedly nearly hitting a police car after running through a red light.
32-year-old Christopher Montgomery was stopped near the intersection of First Avenue and Friendship Street just after 3am Sunday after committing the infraction. He allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred and nonsensical speech, and the strong odor of ingested alcohol. Montgomery was also reportedly wearing bar wrist bands at the time of the stop.
He showed measurable signs of impairment on field tests, and was unable to successfully complete a Datamaster test after two tries.
Montgomery was charged with OWI first offense, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to a year if convicted.
