A transient is accused of vandalizing a car over a dogsitting dispute.
Iowa City Police say the alleged victim had 22-year-old Detreana Van Beek watch his dog for a few days while he was out of town. The dog died shortly after the man returned home, but Van Beek reportedly still wanted to be paid $34. When the man failed to pay right away, Van Beek allegedly began sending aggressive text messages, and eventually went to his Carriage Hill residence and began pounding on his door. When the man refused to answer, Van Beek reportedly left on the front step a ring that he had given to Van Beek as a gift.

After Van Beek left, the resident reported finding his vehicle parked outside had been keyed. Damage was estimated at over $4,400.

When police interviewed Van Beek about the incident, she allegedly said she would be willing to work things out with the other subject, even reportedly saying, “I didn’t even need to go over there…for real.” When asked if she regretted her actions, police say Van Beek responded, “Oh yeah, absolutely.”

Van Beek is charged with 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted, she faces a maximum of five years in prison.
