Iowa City Police say an Illinois man celebrated the start of classes at the University of Iowa coming up on Monday by spending someone else’s money to buy drinks for others at a downtown Iowa City bar over the weekend.
19-year-old Shane Prochaska of Woodridge, Illinois is accused of using a stolen credit card at The Summit on South Clinton Street to run up a tab of $415. Summit staff reported to Iowa City Police Prochaska was trying to leave the bar at closing time despite them trying to stop him after learning he had been using someone else’s credit card. Officers encountered Prochaska outside the bar just after 2:00 Sunday morning, and say he showed signs of intoxication. An investigation determined that the victim had lost his wallet and began noting charges on his credit card from The Summit, so he notified the nightclub, which was able to single out Prochaska as the suspect.
A search of Prochaska’s person reportedly turned up the stolen wallet, a nicotine vape and three fake ID’s.
Prochaska was arrested and charged with Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card, 4th Degree Theft, 5th Degree Theft, Public Intoxication, and three counts of Possession of a Fake ID. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over six years in jail.
Prochaska is not listed as a UI student in university records.
