A second juvenile has been charged with Attempted Murder in connection with a shooting earlier this month in Iowa City that sent four people to the hospital.
Iowa City Police say 17-year-old Nathaniel D. Washington of Savannah Drive in North Liberty and 17-year-old Moayed Elsid of Westgate Street in Iowa City were involved in an altercation in the parking lot of 618 East Court Street just before 3:00 on the morning of August 3rd when the two allegedly shot at a woman who was hit in the stomach. That person was transported to a local hospital. A short time later, three other shooting victims were admitted to various area medical facilities.
Police say Washington and Elsid have been involved in a dispute with the woman’s juvenile son, who has been stabbed twice in the last year. A stabbing at West High School led to felony charges against Elsid and then-17-year-old Tion Exum of Coralville, who both pleaded guilty to felony burglary charges.
Investigators say Washington told them he didn’t fire his weapon, which he claimed he gave to his brother as they fled on foot from the shooting. Both Washington and his brother were stopped by police as they were leaving the scene. The brother reportedly had a Taurus G2s 9mm pistol in his possession. The gun was loaded but appeared to have suffered a malfunction and jammed.
Both Washington and Elsid are charged with Attempted Murder and Possession of a Firearm as a Felon, If convicted on both counts, they each face a maximum of 30 years in prison.
