The Coralville City Council says they will move forward on a formal vote guaranteeing equal protection of its residents.

KCRG reports during Tuesday’s meeting, citizens stressed the importance of the vote, with recent changes to state laws making Iowa the first state to remove gender identity from its Civil Rights Act.

Residents who spoke at the meeting said they’ve discussed moving out of the state to somewhere more safe and inclusive, and encouraged the Council to vote to protect people who actually need it. One resident says because of the changes at the state level, Iowa is feeling “less like home.”

Iowa City’s council recently reaffirmed protections against discrimination based on gender identity.

The Coralville Council plans to take a formal vote at its first October meeting.
