United States Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks is calling for the University of Iowa Center for Intellectual Freedom to be named for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley State University on Wednesday.
Miller-Meeks spent much of the day Thursday on X calling for the Oskaloosa school district to take action against a teacher who wrote “1 Nazi down” on social media after the shooting. Miller-Meeks later wrote that the teacher has since been suspended and the Oskaloosa superintendent is recommending his firing.
But at 2:45 Thursday afternoon Miller-Meeks turned to another Kirk-related issue, tweeting:
“The University of Iowa Center for Intellectual Freedom should live up to its name by honoring a true defender of free speech and open debate.
Charlie Kirk dedicated his life to advancing intellectual freedom, empowering students, and challenging the cancel culture mob that seeks to silence dissent.
That’s why I strongly support renaming it the Charlie Kirk Center for Intellectual Freedom, a lasting tribute that would inspire generations of Iowans to stand boldly for liberty and the truth.”
As of Thursday night, there was no official response from university officials or the Board of Regents.
