A Coralville man was taken into custody this week after allegedly trespassing twice at the same house.
Deputies were called to a residence on Oak Leaf Lane NE in Iowa City Tuesday afternoon. The homeowner stated she had spent the night with a family member Monday and returned home the next day to find the doors unlocked, lights on, and a bike on the property that did not belong to her or anyone she knew.
Wednesday afternoon, the homeowner reportedly woke from a nap to find 28-year-old Jamaal Brooks of the Coralville Strip in her home. She asked who he was and why he was there, and Brooks stated that he had come to see a friend and left his bike outside, just as he had with another bike he allegedly left a few days prior by accident.
The homeowner and a neighbor tried to maintain visual contact with Brooks as he rode away but were unsuccessful. A deputy made contact with him riding in the area. He claimed that he accidentally went to the wrong house.
However, deputies were informed by the friend he came to see that Brooks had been to his residence more than twice and had been kicked out earlier in the day after a verbal altercation. Brooks reportedly made mention of the victim’s house, showing an interest in the items inside.
Brooks was arrested and charged with one count of 2nd degree Burglary, one count of 3rd degree Burglary, and two counts of Trespass. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
