Jon Green, chair of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, has chosen to defy state and federal decrees to fly flags at half-mast through the weekend in memory of slain conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.

Green made the announcement on his Facebook page Thursday.

The post said, “I condemn Kirk’s killing, regardless of who pulled the trigger or why. But I will not grant Johnson County honors to a man who made it his life’s mission to denigrate so many of the constituents I have sworn an oath to protect, and who did so much to harm not only the marginalized, but also to degrade the fabric of the body politic.

“Johnson County Flags will fly as usual.  I will accept any consequence, whether legal or electoral, for my decision.  It is mine alone.”

President Donald Trump ordered flags to fly at half-mast through sunset Sunday, and announced at a 9/11 ceremony at the Pentagon Thursday that he was going to give a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom Award to Kirk.

Kirk was assassinated Wednesday at Utah Valley State University, and was known for his anti-LGBTQ  and Christian Nationalist views.  Journalist and college professor Stacey Patton went viral for sharing her experience of being on Kirk’s “digital hit list” of people who were critical of him or his organization, and described the harassment she endured.
