The city of Cedar Rapids’ code enforcement manager has been accused of insurance fraud for allegedly submitting a forged receipt for medication reimbursement for his dog.

The Gazette reports 53-year old Greg Buelow was arrested Wednesday on a warrant issued last week, charging him with insurance fraud — presenting false information and forgery, both class D felonies. He was released on a promise to appear for an initial appearance Sept. 17 in Linn County District Court.

Court records indicate allege Buelow provided the false information to an insurance company for a pet insurance claim, seeking reimbursement for prescription medications on June 2nd.

To avoid conflict of interest, Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks requested and was granted a special prosecutor for the case. The Johnson County Attorney’s Office has been appointed to prosecute the case.

Buelow has been employed by the city since 1995 in various departments, including Joint Communications, the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, City Manager’s Office, and Building Services before being employed in his current position. The City’s website still shows him as an active employee.

If convicted on the charges, Buelow faces up to 10 years in prison.
