A West Liberty man is accused of hitting an Iowa City bicyclist with his car, then fleeing the scene.
24-year-old Yohanan Negrete of East 17th Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 2:15 Saturday morning. Iowa City Police say Negrete was driving a 2010 Nissan Altima on the 700 block of South Clinton Street just before 10:45 Friday night when he hit a subject who was riding a bicycle. Negrete then reportedly fled the scene without checking on the injured victim.
A Johnson County deputy stopped Negrete on Highway 6 about two miles east of Iowa City. He reportedly showed signs of intoxication and claimed he could not recall hitting anyone. He was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
