A Sigourney man has died at University of Iowa Health Care while serving a prison sentence.

The Iowa Department of Corrections says 29-year-old Mason Kendall Simons was pronounced dead at 7:07 Sunday night at the UIHC Hawkins Drive facility.

Simons had been serving a two-year sentence on an Assault Causing Bodily Injury charge out of Jefferson County. His sentence began on March 14, 2025.

Previous car theft and criminal mischief charges against Simons in Washington County were later dismissed, although he had other previous criminal convictions.
