A reported downtown Iowa City assault that required paramedics for the victim has led to an Iowa City man’s arrest.
First responders were called to a vehicle parked near the intersection of Clinton and College Streets just before 11:45 Friday night. Witnesses reported that 29-year-old Christopher Bertling of Rundell Street had reached into the driver’s side front window and struck the driver in the face, requiring immediate medical attention. Bertling, who police say showed signs of intoxication and refused breath testing, also allegedly damaged the vehicle.
Arriving officers say Bertling tried walking away and refused their commands to stop. He was taken into custody and charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Public Intoxication, 5th Degree Criminal Mischief, and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 15 months in jail.
