Google announced Monday that they have reached a long-term agreement with the owner of the Duane Arnold Energy Center to provide power to a new data center in Linn County.

Iowa’s News Now reports NextEra Energy and Google’s agreement will run at least 25 years.

In a release, John Ketchum, chairman and CEO of NextEra Energy called the restarting of the nuclear facility “an important milestone.” He added bringing nuclear energy back to Iowa will help accelerate the development of next-generation nuclear technology.

The Duane Arnold Energy Center shut down in 2020 but is expected to restart by the beginning of 2029. The restarting, as well as the development of the data center, is expected to create thousands of jobs.
