Momentum is building for immigrant worker protections as the Iowa City Human Rights Commission voted unanimously this week to recommend that the City Council adopt Escucha Mi Voz Iowa’s “Due Process and Workplace Safety” Resolution.

A release from the organization explains the measure would ensure that local government offices and workplaces uphold basic Fourth Amendment protections against warrantless searches and detentions.

The unanimous vote is seen as a major step forward ahead of the Iowa City City Council’s meeting next week, where Escucha Mi Voz members plan to demand adoption of the resolution.

The resolution, introduced at a Joint Entities meeting last week by Escucha Mi Voz members, would standardize simple, common-sense policies across government workplaces — requiring judicial warrants for non-public access, designating safe worker spaces, training staff on constitutional rights, posting clear entrance notices, and encouraging local businesses to do the same.

City Council members have praised the proposal for advancing both civil rights and community safety. Mayor Pro-Tem Mazahir Salih described the proposal as “amazing recommendations.”
