Iowa City Police have arrested a West Liberty man they say shoplifted from an Iowa City Casey’s…then chased after an employee who recorded the incident with his phone.
19-year-old Zayne Lang of Davis Avenue allegedly entered the Mormon Trek Boulevard Casey’s just before 5:45 on Halloween night, grabbed two sandwiches, and fled without paying. Lang reportedly saw the clerk recording him with his phone as he ran, so he allegedly chased the employee back into the store while yelling that he was going to take the phone. Other witnesses stepped in to intervene, and the clerk ran to get a knife to defend himself.
Lang was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 5:45 Saturday night and charged with Aggravated Theft. If convicted, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
Police say Lang admitted to stealing the sandwiches and to chasing the clerk, claiming he had been “crashing out”.
