An area transient in the Johnson County Jail on assault and drug possession charges faces additional time behind bars after allegedly assaulting a jailer.
According to the criminal complaint, 51-year-old Jeffrey Smith was in the F-Block at the jail at 11 am Monday when he slid his empty toilet paper roll under his cell door into the day room where an officer was standing, and asked for a new roll. The jailer complied, and when he opened Smith’s cell door to give it to him, he allegedly took the roll and immediately spit in the officer’s face.
As the jailer was leaving the cell block, he allegedly heard Smith laughing and making comments. The spit hit the left side of the jailer’s face and got into his eye, requiring medical attention.
Smith already faced up to 37 months in prison on the previous charges. He has now been charged with Assault by Inmate with Bodily Fluids, a Class D Felony that could add up to five years to his sentence if he’s convicted on all counts.
