An arrest has been made in connection with the Friday afternoon shooting near the intersection of Burlington and Governor Streets, and the suspect has a history of firearms convictions.

Iowa City Police say 22-year-old Xzavier Herman is charged with  Felon in Possession of a Firearm – Second Offense, Going Armed with Intent, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, Use of a Dangerous Weapon in the Commission of a Crime, and Reckless Use of a Firearm.

Arrest records indicate Herman was arguing with another subject outside of his East Burlington Street apartment when he hit the other person with a 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun, then fired a shot that lodged inside a neighboring unit.

The handgun was found after a search warrant was executed in Cedar Rapids, and Herman allegedly admitted to the assault and to firing the weapon.

If convicted on all counts, Herman faces a maximum of 26 years in prison.

Herman has a previous felony conviction from 2022 after he used a firearm to threaten residents of the Town & Campus Apartments on Arthur Street. He was also charged with felonies when he was 15 years old after he was accused of robbing a drug dealer at gunpoint on Wayne Avenue in 2019.
