An Iowa City man who will be on trial next year for allegedly stalking a woman has been additionally accused of violating a no-contact order.
Police were contacted by the victim on November 3rd and said she was eating at Hudson’s Southside Tap on Halloween night when 54-year-old William Easton of Jemma Court walked in directly behind her and then sat in a booth with a group of people. Easton sat facing the victim and eye contact was reportedly made between the two as she left the restaurant.
Police viewed video evidence and determined a no-contact order violation had taken place. A warrant was issued, and Easton was served Wednesday. He was released on his own recognizance with a hearing scheduled for November 25th.
Easton was charged when the victim contacted Iowa City Police and gave them consent the morning of May 13th to look under her vehicle, a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta, to look for a tracking device. It was parked at Lot 3 on Museum Drive. A black box was reportedly discovered magnetically attached to the passenger side frame.
The next afternoon, the victim requested another search while the vehicle was parked in Lot 11 on South Madison Street. Again, a tracking device was discovered attached to the passenger side frame.
When arrested by University of Iowa Department of Public Safety, Easton’s phone allegedly contained an app that was used to monitor the tracking devices.
He faces two counts of Stalking using a Technological device, and one count of Unlawful Interception of Communication from November of last year. If convicted on the charges, Easton could be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison. A case management conference is scheduled for January 9th, with jury trial set for March 3rd.
