Iowa City man accused of brandishing firearm during argument; two police officers injured in ensuing foot chase

An Iowa City man has been arrested after allegedly brandishing a firearm during an argument. Two Iowa City Police officers were injured in the ensuing foot chase.

According to arrest records, a weapons offense was reported at The Quarters on Highway 6 East just after 3:15 Saturday morning. The alleged victim told police that 25-year-old Jaquon Hemphill, who lives at The Quarters, had brandished a gun from his waistband and threatened to kill someone.

Hemphill was located nearby, and a foot chase ensued. One officer suffered a broken leg, and another had rib injuries and a laceration. Hemphill was eventually caught, and a blue backpack in his possession reportedly contained a Glock 19, nearly 200 grams of marijuana, a digital scale, packaging materials, and an unmarked container with a prescription drug.

Hemphill has previous domestic abuse convictions, making him ineligible to possess a firearm. He’s now charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Domestic Abuser, Assault Using a Weapon, 1st Degree Harassment, Interference With Official Acts Involving a Firearm, Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Controlled Substance Violation, Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, and Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 31 years in prison.
