An investigation has determined that the death of a child in a West Liberty drowning last summer was accidental.

A news release from the West Liberty Police Department says that conclusion comes after a comprehensive review of witness statements, physical evidence, and medical examination reports from the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Just before noon on August 25th officers were dispatched to a residence located in the 500 block of East 1st Street following a 9-1-1 call reporting an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, West Liberty Police and West Liberty Fire and EMS personnel located a one-year-old child who had been found unresponsive in a backyard swimming pool. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the family, first responders, and hospital medical staff, the child was later pronounced deceased at University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City.
