The Trump administration’s cuts to homeless prevention funding are hitting home in Iowa.
KCRG TV reports the Department of Housing and Urban Development cut its funding to Iowa for homeless prevention by 67% as a result of a policy change from the Trump administration. Previously, Iowa received nearly $7 million annually through the Continuum of Care program; this has been reduced to just $2.3 million this year.
The funding helps homeless shelters with permanent supportive housing and their rapid rehousing programs.
Area homeless advocates say these cuts will hurt those on the brink of homelessness who depend on those funds to subsidize rents.
Shelter House in Iowa City told the TV station they use these funds to support about 500 people. They’re now trying to find ways to make up the difference in HUD funding.
Willis Dady Homeless Services in Cedar Rapids is in the same predicament. They use about $600,000 in federal funding to help about 130 people and will be looking to fill the gap to continue serving them.
