The Department of Natural Resources and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office are reminding hunters about rules, regulations, and safety tips as shotgun deer season opens this weekend.

Regarding proximity to houses:
– Code requires that hunters must be 200 yards away from an occupied building to discharge a firearm.
– An exception exists if the hunter gains permission from the homeowner to discharge the firearm closer to the house.

As for trespassing:
– Hunters should gain permission every time they access a property, or every year they are going to hunt to avoid confusion with landowners.
– Hunters must get permission from landowners before hunting on the property.
– Hunters may not shoot across property lines without permission from the landowner.
– Game can be retrieved from private property, but the hunter may not take a weapon with them (unless they gain permission first).
