A Coralville man faces possible prison time after allegedly assaulting the mother of his child.
Police say 46-year-old Justin Halter of the Western Hills Trailer Park was uncooperative when they arrived at his residence at around 3am December 1st. He was reportedly asked multiple times to step outside, but he continued to shut the door on the officers.
The victim stated that Halter punched her multiple times in the head, then got behind her and put her in a chokehold with both arms while she was holding their child. The mother alleged that she wasn’t able to breathe and almost passed out before Halter let her go. She complained of a sore scratchy throat and shortness of breath.
The couple reportedly have been in a romantic relationship for the past year, and a check of Halter’s criminal record showed three previous domestic abuse assault convictions.
A warrant was issued December 4th; Halter was arrested the next day. He has been charged with Interference with Official Acts, Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or Subsequent Offense, and Child Endangerment. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to over 12 years in prison.
A no-contact order was issued by Judge Mark Neary.
