MidAmerican Energy held an informational meeting Tuesday at the Hills Community Center to discuss a proposed natural gas pipeline that would go through southern Johnson and northern Washington Counties.
The pipeline would connect two other pipelines as part of a larger project to convert a power plant in Cedar Rapids from coal to natural gas. The pipeline would run north-south just west of Highway 218 between Ainsworth and Highway 1 outside of Iowa City, where a new power plant would be built.
About 20 people attended Tuesday’s meeting. The main concern from local residents was about the environmental impact of the project…particularly where it crosses Old Man Creek. Some of those in attendance said they only learned about the project last week.
If the project is approved by the Iowa Utilities Commission, construction could begin as soon as March.
