Cedar Rapids Fire Department Responds to Christmas evening fire

Cedar Rapids Firefighters battled a Christmas evening fire that caused one fatality.

According to a release from the CRFD, firefighters responded to the 3800 block of Bluebird Dr SW for a multi-unit residential structure fire at 5:22p.m. Crews arrived to find an attached garage fully involved and began fire suppression efforts.

Smoke alarms alerted an elderly male resident to the fire. An elderly female resident in the home was exposed to smoke as she attempted to exit. Firefighters and ambulance personnel began immediate medical care on the female victim. She was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced deceased shortly afterward. The name of the victim is being withheld at this time.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire was under control at 6:13p.m.

There is extensive damage to the garage and the interior of the affected unit. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
