A security researcher from Georgia discovered he could access live video feeds from Cedar Rapids Police surveillance cameras and up to 70 other Flock Safety cameras across the country.
KCRG reports Benn Jordan, a YouTuber who researches technology privacy issues, demonstrated he could monitor children playing at parks, people rollerblading, and police responses to emergency calls. From his Atlanta home, he watched Cedar Rapids Police and EMS responding to a mental health check on Second Avenue downtown.
Jordan said he had access to 31 days of recorded footage in addition to live feeds.
Cedar Rapids Police said it was made aware of the issue with its five Condor model cameras on Monday. A spokesperson from Flock Safety said they resolved the issue, which affected what they categorized as a “very small number” of their devices. They added that the only content visible was live or recorded video comparable to what can be observed from a public roadway.
