Midwest lawmakers have issued statements regarding the Trump administration’s capturing of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro over the weekend.
Iowa congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks issued a statement on social media, calling the capture a pivotal victory in the fight against international narco-terrorism. She added, “His regime’s role in flooding our communities with fentanyl has devastated families across Iowa and the nation, claiming far too many American lives.”
There is little evidence showing Venezuela bringing fentanyl to the US. The DEA website says Mexico and China are the primary source countries for fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances trafficked directly into the United States.
Meanwhile, KWQC TV reports Illinois congressman Eric Sorensen called Maduro a corrupt and illegitimate leader who must face justice. However, he expressed his concerns that President Trump took action without the approval of Congress. He posted, “The War Powers Resolution of 1973 requires Congress to be briefed within 48 hours. I look forward to asking the important questions and demanding honest answers.”
