A Coralville man jailed on an assault charge last year faces possible additional jail time after allegedly assaulting a deputy.
28-year-old Luis Penaloza Garcia of Coral Ridge Avenue has been in the Johnson County Jail since November 30th. Sunday night, he was reportedly in his cell with a jail-issued tablet that is capable of watching movies. Security video allegedly caught Garcia raising the tablet over his head and spiking it on the concrete floor, breaking the case into pieces.
About 25 minutes later, a deputy was attempting to hand Garcia his nightly medications. He reportedly lunged at the deputy and punched him twice in the face. The deputy had to use physical force to subdue Garcia. The deputy suffered a bruised right eye and a cut lip.
He was charged with 5th degree Criminal Mischief and Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations. If convicted on the new charges, he could be convicted to over five years in prison.
