Iowa City car fire spreads to residence, five people displaced

A car fire in Iowa City spread to a nearby residence, displacing almost a half-dozen people as a result.

The Iowa City Fire Department reports responding to a car fire near a structure at 1618 Aber Avenue just after 11:30 Friday morning. Responding units encountered the engine compartment of a vehicle on fire in the driveway, along with the extension to the exterior of the garage. The five occupants of the structure were out of the building upon firefighters’ arrival.

The fire was brought under control by 11:47 a.m. and it caused about $10,000 in damage.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. The five occupants of the home were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
