An Iowa City man was arrested last week after failing to stop for police.

According to the arrest report, 30-year-old Jamal McKaufman of Camden Road ignored lights, siren and orders for him to pull over, He was reportedly driving at close to the marked speed limit, and he finally stopped.

McKaufman told officers that he wasn’t trying to elude, he wasn’t going to stop, and was going to his home address.

A check of his criminal record showed outstanding warrants pertaining to a no-contact order. On November 11th, he allegedly went to the subject of the order’s home to get his belongings as part of his one-time visit, without supervision of law enforcement.  During the visit, the woman called 911, where dispatchers reportedly heard lots of screaming and a female screaming “get away from me.” When officers arrived, the victim said she and McKaufman had an argument that escalated to the point where he knocked her glasses off her face, breaking them.

McKaufman faces up to eight years in prison if convicted of all charges, which include eluding, violation of a no-contact order, assault against the subject of a no-contact order, and child endangerment.
