Johnson County Supervisor Jon Green issued a media release addressing comments on the county’s Facebook post celebrating World Hijab Day.

The post was issued on February 1st, proclaiming the event and stating that the county is dedicated to combating stereotypes and raising awareness of the hijab’s importance.

World Hijab Day was created in 2013 after women who wear the headscarf reported bigotry, discrimination and prejudice in the years following the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the United States. It is designed to promote awareness, education and empowerment, independent of any political ideology or economic interest.

After seeing intolerance and hate speech among the comments, Green issued a statement saying that although the First Amendment protects people from being censored by the government, it does not offer freedom from consequence.

He added that the Board of Supervisors adopts many proclamations throughout the year, showing a commitment to a diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible community.

To those who posted Islamophobic and misogynist comments on the post, Green said, “I hope your conduct causes you shame and embarrassment from your friends, family and coworkers. I hope social pressure causes you to rethink your ways.”
