The suspect in a 2024 shooting on the Ped Mall that left two people injured has been given a deferred judgment as part of a plea deal.
That was the ruling handed down by Judge Brandon Schrock to 24-year-old Iziah Poulsen of 19th Avenue in Coralville. Iowa City Police say just before 1:00 on the morning of July 20th, 2024 Poulsen was involved in an argument outside the Graduate Hotel when he discharged a firearm several times. One bullet hit an uninvolved subject. Another hit a nearby taco cart and struck an employee’s hand. Police say Poulsen pistol-whipped and shot at a person who tried to disarm him.
The shooting triggered a HawkAlert from the University of Iowa.
Poulsen has a previous weapons conviction from 2019 in Johnson County, making him ineligible to carry a firearm.
Last week Poulsen was given a deferred judgement on charges of Participating in a Riot and Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Property Damage. Charges of Going Armed With Intent, Dominion or Control of a Firearm By a Felon, Assault While Displaying a Weapon, Assault With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, and two counts of Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Injury were all dismissed. If convicted on all counts, Poulsen would have faced a maximum of 31 years in prison.
